Cancer survivor cares for family with help from OBI partner

BOERNE, Texas - For Socorro, living in a house built out of plywood was the least of her problems.
The cracks in her home led straight to the exterior because the house had no insulation. She had a closet door for an entryway and the only running water was to her toilet.
The 40-something grandmother also faces fighting cancer; caring for her 80-year-old father who is battling prostate cancer; her 21-year-old nephew who is mentally handicapped and a younger sister.
Thanks to the Hill County Daily Bread, Socorro and her family have one less thing to worry about – food. In addition to groceries, she also receives diapers, hygiene and paper products as well as other provisions twice a month.
Hill County Daily Bread receives a some of its food from Operation Blessing via the Hunger Strike Force fleet of trucks. In just three months, Hill County Daily Bread has served 725 households reaching 2,600 individuals through their family mentoring resource programs.
Socorro was connected with a family through the mentoring program. The family has been there to help Socorro navigate through some of life's challenges, explore solutions and provide long-term support.
The group also helped rebuild Socorro's home by replacing the plywood, installing insulation, painting the house, replacing the front door, installing a bathroom and putting in new tile floors.
"Her problems will not be solved in a few weeks or months," said David Hubbard, a representative with Hill County Daily Bread.
Eventually the group plans on providing Socorro and her family with a large manufactured home that will accommodate everyone in one house.
Socorro is one of many facing hunger in the U.S. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, an estimated 800,000 families in America will need some sort of food assistance.
Hill County Daily Bread is doing their part to help alleviate hunger in their area. The outreach, which opened in 2000, has 10,000 square feet of warehouse space and staffs 250 volunteers, services 45 churches and three schools.
Last year, OBI delivered 249,401 pounds of food, drinks, candy, diapers and hygiene products to Hill County Daily Bread. Nationwide, OBI distributes an average of 100 million pounds of food and supplies to a network of partners and agencies each year.
