Hungry Families Receive Food in Time for Thanksgiving
Earlier this fall, players and mascots from the Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars,
Baltimore Ravens and Washington Redskins as well as corporate sponsors joined us in showing
they cared by helping to feed an estimated 12,000 hungry fans. People like Grandma Kay
appreciated the generosity.
Grandma Kay was in a chapter of life meant to be spent enjoying the fruits of her labor.
Instead, the loving woman found herself supporting daughter Brandy and four grandchildren.
Social security did not go a long way with five extra hungry mouths to feed every day.
So when the family heard that we and the Carolina Panthers were giving away free groceries,
they drove the 30-minute drive with hopeful hearts. They stood along with a couple of
thousands of others in the rain waiting for their turn to enter a building at the American
Legion Fairgrounds in Newton, North Carolina.
The grandmother’s heart leapt when she saw volunteers passing out the precious
food to people in front of her. There was plenty for her family as she saw the white
mounds of filled plastic bags. When Grandma Kay’s turn came, she looked inside
the bags to see that they included a pumpkin pie, bottled drinks, cereal and pasta as
well as canned soup and vegetables. Each household also received a gallon of milk. “This
will help us out a lot,” shared Grandma Kay.
When the last hungry family had been served, the Panthers had distributed more than
80,000 pounds of food! Their little fans did not go home disappointed either. Every
boy and girl received a kids’ bag containing books, small toys, a toothbrush,
toothpaste and candy.
