A
Christmas Surprise for Impoverished Texan Family
The holidays do not necessarily carry a sense of celebration when you are poor. The unemployed
and working poor struggle to put food on their tables every day. When many of us are making Christmas
cookies and wrapping presents, some parents are sadly looking into empty cupboards wondering how
they will feed their children their next meal. As you celebrate with your family this year, take
a few minutes to help a hungry family by choosing Gift #1 in our Holiday Catalog. See
how the Holiday Catalog made a difference in Marvin’s family last year…
Marvin, Denise and their five children live in the rural town of Burton, Texas. Employment and
educational opportunities are very sparse in the surrounding area, but the couple strives to provide
the best possible life for their family. Marvin works hard at a construction company, making only
$260 a week; this is less than $14,000 every year before taxes.
Last November, the family’s budget was so tight that Denise could not keep her family fed.
She heard about one of our partnering ministries named Feed My Lambs and applied for food assistance.
Not only did they begin receiving basic groceries on a regular basis, but everyone got Christmas
presents! Now the kids had something to open up Christmas morning!
Marvin and Denise might have difficulty reading and writing, but this did not stop them from
expressing their thanks by asking their 18-year-old daughter Michelle to compose a note. Here
it is…
Dear OBI,
I would like to thank you very much for helping get presents. You all don’t know how
many people ya’ll have helped by getting presents to some people that probably wouldn’t
be getting presents this year because they couldn’t afford to buy gifts. Every present that
a person gets on Christmas is special, so I would like to thank you for helping make some child’s
Christmas more special. You helped a lot of us more than words can every say. Thank you so much.
Sincerely, Michelle
This family of seven is among the 6,605 impoverished Texans that our Houston outreach center
reached out to during the holiday season last year. Right now Operation Blessing’s outreach
centers are in the midst of planning holiday events for the poor across the country. There is
a lot to do; won’t you help?
Feed Hungry Americans
When was the last time your family’s monthly grocery bill was $25? That is all that it will
cost for you to provide a month’s worth of basic holiday groceries for one family.
Choose Gift #1 and help feed an impoverished family.
