Hunger Strike Force
Feeding America's Hidden Hungry
What was she going to do? Virginia didn't have two extra nickels to rub together for food. This Georgian grandmother's trailer was home to her two daughters, one son-in-law, and five grandchildren. Her son-in-law had recently shattered both wrists and was unable to work. Money coming in was just covering living expenses.
Then there was a knock of help...
Each year, the Hunger Strike Force's fleet of tractor trailers deliver desperately needed food to over 120 partnering ministries across the country, enabling them to knock on the doors of America's poor. "The thought of delivering over 60 million pounds of food to America's poor, hungry, and homeless is hard to imagine for the man on the street," comments HSF Director Steve O'Grady. "We are supposed to be the most advanced industrialized country in the world."
That's what George Wooten of Wayne Bailey Produce thought until being moved by a news special on America's poor in Appalachia. His family-owned business had a continuous excess supply of sweet potatoes that was just thrown away. It quickly began to help the hungry! Six years later, people still receive sweet potatoes in their bags of groceries. HSF trucks pick up and distribute generous excess product donations given by hundreds of companies like Wayne Bailey Produce throughout the United States.
Getting from point "A" to point "B" is another story! Stay tuned this month for an in depth look at the Hunger Strike Force.
