HOUSTON, Texas – In the face of disaster, one church is springing into action to meet the needs of its community. Box ‘springing,’ that is. The Rock Ministries is making sleep a priority for hurricane victims, by delivering new Queen-size mattresses and box springs to weary residents.
“Many of the evacuees had moved into apartments with little or no furniture,” said David Pittman, Senior Pastor of The Rock Ministries. “I thought that maybe one of the greatest needs would probably be a ‘good night's rest’ in order to function as best as possible when facing trials and tough decisions in their daily rigorous routine.”
Facing trials is indeed daunting, especially for Derrick and Dorothea, a young couple with three children ages ten, five and three. Derrick and his family are not only living with little food and one air mattress, but they are also sharing their two-bedroom apartment with 15 other evacuees.
The church was able to give them several hundred dollars for food and supplies, as well as two queen-sized mattresses with box springs and frames.
“It is quite a privilege to see the smiles on these faces after such a devastating and catastrophic event,” said Pittman.
Dolly, a single parent of a 15-year-old son and an 8-year-old daughter lost all her possessions and was living in a one bedroom apartment with no furniture. With no family in the city, there seemed to be little hope.
But thanks to the partnership between Operation Blessing and the Rock Ministries, they now have a place to lay their head.
“We were able to provide this family with help for household supplies and deliver two sets of mattresses with box springs and frames,” said Pittman. “We are in a position to provide financial and material service to evacuees of the state of Louisiana thanks to the funds we’ve received from Operation Blessing.
And this is just the beginning of our help,” he added.
