THAILAND - Children in the Chumporn Province of Southern Thailand are being supplied with the education and nourishment they require to overcome the immense challenge of having one or more parents with HIV.
According to reports, at least one out of every 100 adults in Thailand is infected with HIV, and AIDS remains a leading cause of death. For children living in these affected households, their future is often an uncertain one, filled with poverty and disease.
In partnership with a local church, Operation Blessing is providing children with education, nutrition, and medical care, as well as counseling and emotional support. The full-service care includes tuition fees, school uniforms and supplies, food, annual health checkups, counseling, and monthly kid’s programs and activities.
The "Bless-A-Child" program in Chumporn, which has been in operation since June 2005, also helps a number of needy families in the program with livelihood assistance.
Songkran, whose 12-year-old son is enrolled in the program, recently received a loan from Operation Blessing to help establish a small chicken-breeding business with her husband, Leekit.
For about $88 US, the couple built a chicken coop, purchased chickens, and has already repaid the loan with the profits earned from their business.
"Before enrolling in this program, our family really suffered because we didn’t know how to make ends meet," Songkran said. "Now we feel much happier and less worried."
