Texan Children Comforted In Times of Crisis
Shrill police, ambulance and fire engine sirens broke the early morning's peace. A safe distance away, the frightened child's family helplessly watched as wicked flames consumed everything in their Houston home. Compassionately, a police officer approached the little one with what would become a cuddly comfort. More here...
Every day the Houston Police Department (HPD) responds to family distress calls. Whether the call involves a robbery or house fire, a domestic abuse case or child protective services has to step in, children are always the smallest and most vulnerable of victims. In these most critical times the officer strives to comfort the involved children as much as possible.
For several years Somebody Cares Houston has helped the dedicated HPD's Community Outreach Division do just this by donating "Somebody Cares Bears". Each teddy bear has a t-shirt with the inscription, "Somebody Cares - a true witness rescues lives. Proverbs 14:25" with a contact phone number in case the child needs help again. Recently, OBI's Bless-A-Child program was able to partner with Somebody Cares Houston in supplying over 270 of the bears to the HPD. "The power behind this [program] is that the child is getting the bear from someone in authority," commented Somebody Cares' Henry Dibrell.
"OBI cannot be everywhere, we are just a few. However, when we put resources into the hands of the local community it empowers and allows them to have a much greater impact on their neighbors," shared OBI's Christianne Debysingh.
In the future, Somebody Cares Houston wishes to be able to give the Somebody Cares Bears to additional police departments throughout their network.
OBI's Bless-A-Child (BAC) strives to encourage and empower local community organizations and churches in each city in becoming involved in the healthy and balanced development of at-risk children and youth.
