Orlando youths help fund 52 wells

Posted: January 03, 2008

ORLANDO, Florida – It all started with a dream to be more than just your average youth group.

The young people of Revolution Student Ministries in Orlando organized a major fundraising drive to build wells in impoverished villages overseas.

For John Krall and Revolution Student Ministries of Calvary Assembly of God in Orlando, Fla., that goal has led to the transformation of thousands of lives around the world with something as basic as water.

“I’d read an article about the need for clean water overseas, and it sparked my interest,” said Krall, youth pastor at Revolution. “God really started to impress it on my heart.”

Soon after, Krall gave a sermon on the subject to the whole youth group. Initially, the plan was to raise funds for a single well in the country of Rwanda.

But then the ideas started pouring in.

“The youth came up with all the ideas for raising funds,” Krall said. “One of the plans was to distribute water bottles that people could fill with loose change and return. It was a big success.”

The fundraising drive also included events such as bake sales, and selling t-shirts with the project motto, “Where There’s A Well, There’s A Way!”

So far, the youth have raised more than $52,000 from the sale of t-shirts and other efforts.

Soon the whole church was participating, and before long, the youths had raised more than $52,000.

Working alongside OBI’s Water Wells program, the church funded the drilling and construction of 52 wells in impoverished villages in Cambodia, India, Laos, Liberia, Myanmar and the Philippines.

And the students aren’t finished yet. The project will continue through April 2008.

“This has been an eye-opening and amazing experience for us,” Krall said. “It has shown us we can do anything because of God— even help thousands of people.”
