SOYAPANGO, El Salvador – When Norma Villatoro lost her job, the family no longer had the ability to pay all their bills, much less take care of their son's mounting medical needs.
The family was paying an average of $50 a month on medication for their son, who had severe allergies, ear infections and multiple upper respiratory infections. The family was in need of antibiotics and vitamins but could no longer afford it.
Ironically, Norma would often volunteer with her church at various medical missions helping others in need. However, since her son was so sick, she lost connection with the people who could help her.
"The one who used to help others was now in serious need of help herself," said Evelin Castellanos, a representative working with Operation Blessing in El Salvador.

Thanks to an OBI-sponsored medical clinic in the area, Norma was able to take her son to get the help he needed. A local volunteer doctor treated her son and gave him the medications he required.
"This has helped relieve some of the financial stress the family was under," Castellanos said. "We gave them help and encouragement when they needed it most."
The doctor also told the family they could come back to him whenever they needed further medical care.
"We are grateful to receive this medication," Norma said. "We weren't able to buy them and OBI came through for us."
This year alone, OBI has sent three separate shipments of medication to the region valued at more than $10 million.
