Dinner for twenty

Posted: May 27, 2009

The Kings started welcoming people to their family dinners nearly 25 years ago. On any given night, anywhere from 20 to 40 people gather for dinner in their backyard.

CHINO, Calif. – There’s nothing ordinary about family dinners at the Kings’ house.

On any given night, anywhere from 20 to 40 people gather for dinner in the backyard of David and Charlene’s Chino, California, home.

“Everyone eats whatever we’re eating for dinner,” David said. “We just make a little more.”

The Kings started welcoming people to their family dinners nearly 25 years ago when a woman asked if she could pick fruit from their plum trees to feed her family. In that moment, David and Charlene said they knew what God meant for them to do.

Since then, their nightly dinners have grown from a handful of people to nearly 40 – an increase the King family believes is due to the growing economic crisis, unemployment, home foreclosures and more.

“We’ll see single moms with their kids and even whole families coming over because they don’t have a job and just need food,” said Eddie King, who helps his parents with the dinners and food distributions.

But family dinners are just one piece of the puzzle.

Each week, Isaiah's Rock picks up food and relief product from OBI’s Mira Loma-based warehouse. With those supplies, they are able to distribute food to approximately 500 families every week.

For the last 15 years, the Kings’ feeding ministry, Isaiah’s Rock, has been partnering with Operation Blessing to help hundreds of families struggling in their community.

Each week, Isaiah's Rock picks up ten pallets of food and relief product from OBI’s Mira Loma-based warehouse.

With those supplies, they are able to distribute food to approximately 500 families each week at 3 separate distributions, in addition to their nightly suppers.

The food from Operation Blessing makes up over 90 percent of their provisions, and the Kings run a lawn care business to supplement the rest.

As a result of the joint efforts, innumerable families have been helped through their hardest times.

Carolina was a single mother of seven children when she began bringing her family to the Isaiah’s Rock food distributions 17 years ago. Now, her children are grown and she is employed as a security officer, but she still attends the weekly distributions, not out of need, but out of gratitude. She and her children volunteer their time to give back to the ministry that they say changed their lives.

“They do this because they love to help people,” said Eddie King of his parents. “And they’ll keep doing it as long as people keep knocking at their door.”
