CHESAPEAKE, Va. – It was only her second time coming to OBI’s dock ministry, but already Shirley is seeing the difference a little extra food can make.
“We feed about 200 families a month,” said Shirley, who has been involved in food outreach for the last 15 years.
That number has increased from just a few months ago and we can’t just turn them away. We’re blessed to get this food. Anything is a help.”
Once a month, representatives from about 31 local churches and food pantries pull up to the loading docks at OBI’s Chesapeake-based warehouse in trucks, vans and U-Hauls to pick up pallets of food and relief.
Depending on the available resources, that relief can range from drinks and chips to paper products and canned goods.
Shirley and her husband Carroll currently volunteer with their church’s food outreach ministry.
“One time, we didn’t have enough food to fill out the packages, so my husband and I went to the store to buy the rest of the items that were needed,” Shirley said. “We don’t feel right about eating when others aren’t.”
In addition to the Chesapeake dock ministry, which gives out an average of 45,000 pounds a month to help local families in need, OBI also holds dock ministry pick-ups at their warehouses in Ocala, Fla., and Mira Loma, Calif., which distribute a combined monthly average of more than 1 million pounds of food and relief product.
