Supplies help flooded Nigerian villages stay alive

Posted: Sept. 21, 2007
By: John Patrick

Heavy flooding in August destroyed ten villages in the Langtang area of central Nigeria, displacing several thousand people.

LANGTANG, Nigeria – After losing his farm and watching the destruction of his village, Patrick felt as if he were living a nightmare.

He and his family narrowly escaped the floods that drenched Langtang, destroying his farm, home and village. As a result of the devastation, Patrick took his four children to stay at a relief camp in central Nigeria.

They weren’t alone. More than 3,400 villagers, including 1,800 children, poured into refugee camps after the worst flooding in 40 years destroyed 10 villages in the area.

OBI teams brought food, medicine, clothing, blankets and cooking utensils to more than 3,400 people living in two disaster relief camps.

The situation in the camps was desperate.

Operation Blessing workers responded to the crisis by distributing food, clothing, blankets and cooking utensils to the villagers. Medical teams established clinics where they treated and gave medicine to hundreds of people.

Patrick, along with his family, was grateful.

“If it were not for you I do not know what would have happened to my four children that have been crying for food,” he said. “I don’t know how to thank you for the love you have shown us in this time of our need.”

"We would have been dead by now if it were not for God’s intervention,” said a village leader. "With your continued help, we shall stay alive.”

Ezra Manfer, a leader of one of the villages that was destroyed, also expressed his gratitude.

“We would have been dead by now if it were not for God’s intervention,” he said. “Please extend our appreciation to those that made the money available for you to buy the items you have distributed to us. With your prayers and continued help, we shall stay alive.”

Okey Onwudiwe contributed to this report.
